People: The Light

The Light is a short film I edited for People, a club in Stuttgart. I'd filmed a fashion show for CIWEN, who is now a designer in London. Some of the footage comes from the afterparty. The show had gone well and everyone was in a good mood.

The other footage came from a short-film competition. I asked Markus Ehrle, an ocularist in Stuttgart, if I could film him making a glass eye. I could already picture the shots. He makes around a thousand eyes a year, each by hand for one person. He also travelled abroad to fit prostheses for war victims and injured people, much of it pro bono. I shot on a Sony A7S II, straight to card, with no rig.

I wrote the poem you hear and did the sound design. Bob Darling recorded the verse.

When I was young, all that mattered was to hear and breathe the night, gravitating towards it like flies to the light. I am old now, I cannot see it anymore, but I do not care. I feel the light through the people.
